Cold wax medium has been used for decades to expand the expressive possibilities of oil paint. Made from beeswax, resins, and a small amount of solvent, it creates luminous, textural surfaces with a beautiful matte finish while accelerating drying time. The medium invites layering, scraping, carving, and revealing hidden passages, resulting in paintings rich with depth and history.

Designed for beginning and intermediate artists, this four-day workshop introduces the fundamentals of oil and cold wax while providing time to explore the medium in greater depth. We’ll begin on Arches Oil Paper, allowing you to experiment freely before moving to cradled wood panels. You’ll learn to build luminous layers while exploring color, temperature, rhythm, pattern, movement, texture, and contrast.

Working on multiple paintings at once allows layers to dry while encouraging the development of a cohesive series. You’ll also learn how to mount finished paper paintings onto cradled panels, making this an ideal medium for destination workshops, as paper paintings travel easily between sheets of wax paper.

Diane Williams is renowned for her large-scale paintings, characterized by bold contrasts and vibrant hues, drawing viewers into compositions that explore nature and consciousness.

Chuck Potter has developed innovative techniques in plaster, focusing on ancient myth, curiosities of the cosmos, and geographical phenomena.

Blending Western and Eastern art practices from their studies at the University of Hangzhou, China, their work reflects a unique fusion. Operating from studios in Crockett, CA, and Greenville, CA, Diane and Chuck offer transformative workshops that extend beyond technique to delve into the depths of each artist’s desires. Through their shared YouTube channel and online workshop series, they enrich the artistic community worldwide.
