Have you ever thought to yourself, “I wish I could REALLY SEE what I’m trying to paint” or “I want to paint outside, but I don’t know how to start” or “I’ve tried plein air, and I need some help to get better”?

Come gain confidence with plein air just in time for the outdoor painting season! This class is designed for people who are:

  • Beginning plein air painters who want to gain new skills
  • Experienced indoor painters who want to try the great outdoors
  • Intermediate plein air painters who want to level up

The spring date of this class is intended to jump-start your plein air season. If it pours rain, we will use plein air gear to paint from photos or under cover, but if the weather cooperates, we’ll head outside.

In this class, we will cover:

  • Plein air equipment, with expert tips and tricks to make painting outside easier
  • The plein air process—how do I get what I see onto the canvas or paper?
  • Leveling up—what do I need to do to become a better plein air painter?

For this class, I will demonstrate in oils or gouache.

Instructor Bio: Lorraine Goddard’s artwork unites two of her greatest passions: creativity and the outdoors. As an avid traveler and hiker from the Pacific Northwest, she strives to fill her paintings with the beauty and power of nature.

All of Lorraine’s oil and gouache paintings—whether completed in the field or in her home studio in Washington State—are fundamentally inspired by the plein air experience and the color of light in the natural world. Her paintings have featured in group shows since 2021 with the Plein Air Washington Artists, and she has been juried into competitions and exhibitions including Driggs Plein Air, Pacific Northwest Plein Air, Plein Air Edmonds and Plein Air Views of Washington.

After fifteen years as a classroom teacher, Lorraine now divides her time between her day job as a writer and her passion for painting. She lives near Seattle and has degrees in history, education, and music from Whitworth University and a Master of Education from the University of Washington.
