Join Mike Wise for this five-day workshop at his home studio on beautiful Whidbey Island in Puget Sound. During this special workshop, students will paint en plein air and complete the pieces in Mike’s art studio. Mike will teach his methods and techniques for capturing stunning landscape scenes with demonstration and individual instruction, followed by sessions in the studio where students will finish the paintings started in the field using photo references taken in the field.
See how this nationally renowned impressionist painter works, how his studio is set up, and what tools he uses daily to create his stunning work. Mike’s studio is large, airy and inviting, and students often find the lovely studio grounds themselves suitable for painting. While venturing out into the field on central Whidbey Island, students will enjoy prairie vistas, lavender fields, log-strewn northwest beaches, and the charming seaside town of Coupeville.
Throughout the five days with Mike, students will learn the process from start to finish; gathering information in the field via plein air painting and camera, and using that content to compose larger studio works. Mike will help students to identify great subject matter and learn how to use reference material gathered in the field to compose dynamic landscape paintings. Mike will guide his students in the technique of creating layers with brushes, palette knife, shapers, and mediums. He will also discuss how to create a good working studio and how to use technology as a composition tool to create the perfect reference images for painting.
The workshop will include a balance of field and studio work and is limited to twelve students to ensure plenty of individualized instruction. Suited to both oil and acrylic.
