Wells, Robert (#6372) “Join the Family” with British oil painter Robert Wells- ONLINE, Saturdays, April 1, 8, 15

This year we are offering a great opportunity to study online from an international figure in the painting world! Robert E. Wells is a Yorkshire-born artist, known for his cityscape paintings as well as rural landscapes and figurative works. He finds inspiration in the unusual aspects of everyday life, encouraging the viewer to create their own narrative interpretations of his often ambiguous and sometimes conflicting imagery.

Week One: “At Leisure”, we will examine the painting entitled “Beer & Ice Cream” through a series of black and white drawings leading to an oil sketch study. Week Two: “Comfortably Numb”, will look at using atmosphere in a painting to drive narratives, black and white sketches and painted vignettes will emphasize the relationship between composition and technique to drive narrative content. Week Three: “Fortune Teller”, will take a closer look at the interpersonal relationship of people within their environment, with symbolic gestures helping to form an unseen story.

Each session will last for approximately 2.5 hours, this will include a brief instruction/overview of the day’s proceedings, live black & white drawings / live oil painting session, this will be interspersed by prerecorded segments including a look at current studio projects, and gallery visits, and picture framing techniques. The purpose is to give a broader view of a full-time artist working day, encouraging participants to join and absorb general studio practices. All levels of standards are welcome, participants are considered as equals, and may wish to follow along with the work examples or bring their own reference material.

Whilst the sessions deal mainly with drawing and oil painting, any mediums and techniques are welcome, we encourage a flexible, broad approach to the subject, without necessarily to complete any final works. We aim to explore drawing and painting in a relaxed, free manner, without the fear of being judged or criticized. Each session will finish with a general overview and a suggested painting challenge to take through to the next week (this being optional).
