Late 2021, Date TBD, 1-3 p.m.
$35, $10 materials
Learn the basics of wrapping smooth beach rocks with cane to make one-of-a-kind Whidbey gifts, each as individual as you are! BYO(S)R! – Bring Your Own (Special) Rock (or choose one from the instructor’s bucket).
$10.00 for materials will cover natural cane to weave with plus a little extra to take home. Some helpful information and alternative suggestions will also be provided. Rocks will be available if you don’t have time to collect your own.
If you can, please bring an old towel, a small (6-8″) plastic tub to soak materials in, scissors, and a small flat screwdriver or an awl, if you have one. Best rocks for wrapping are smooth with no sharp edges, fairly flat at least on one side, about 3-5″ long, and easiest to learn on are oval to round-ish in shape, with 2 edges fairly parallel.
Skill Level: Mostly all, but probably not suitable for very young people or those with arthritis or hand/finger conditions that prevent gripping the rock and weaving material.
Bio: Jan Smith is a basket weaver and fiber arts person who came to her interests in these areas through her other hobby of archaeology, which gave her a deep curiosity about how people of all cultures have come to know, appreciate, and utilize the natural materials all around them.
