We will draw beautiful Whidbey Island landscapes in both charcoal and color pencil. Students will explore additive and subtractive drawing approaches in charcoal drawings working on both white and toned papers for the first half of this workshop. In the second half we will work with Color Pencil Landscape Drawing techniques. Charcoal will boost your abilities to see and express light to dark values. Color Pencil will offer another dry medium to express yourself in the field. Both mediums offer limitless creative potential. We will work to create dynamic compositional drawings while identifying line, shape, value, texture, and mark making to create compelling landscape compositions. Students will explore light and movement using layers of media. Enjoy quick sketch studies to strengthen your composition skills as well as longer more intensive drawings. Frequent Artist Demos, inspiring visual examples, lots of individual help, and short group critiques will build your confidence in drawing.
While we plan to be outside most of this workshop, please also bring landscape photos printed from your own iPhone photoshoots on Whidbey in case it rains and we have to go inside for a short bit. bring several of your own photos printed out in black and white on white copy paper to mark up with color pencil.
Level: Beginner to Advanced students. Everyone will benefit from the beauty, Fresh air, and Live Sketching on location with explorative drawing.
