Printing Your World: Creating a Palette of Fabrics with Monotype
Cameron Mason, Instructor
Dates: Sunday, June 4th – Thursday, June 8th, 2023 (9am-4pm)
Tuition: $625
Registration: $25
Materials: $40
This workshop emphasizes process and experimentation, learning to control technique while celebrating the happy accident. 100% mercerized cotton PFD (prepared for dyeing) fabrics from Dharma Trading or Testfabrics are recommended. Any 100% cotton or other cellulose fabric (linen, hemp, rayon) will work for this workshop but if it is not PFD it may have additives that will retard color intensity. Silk will also work but will yield different color than cellulose fibers. Do not bring wool or polyester fabrics. Feel free to bring your favorites fabrics but realize that different blends and weaves will react differently to the dyes. Pre-washing is recommended. The minimum yardage is a guideline, you know yourself and your habits in workshops. Some students will barely use the minimum and others will use much more. Bring fabrics amounts accordingly.
Instructor Bio: Cameron Mason was introduced to fiber art by using batik as a way to create large-scale elements for performance. Intrigued by the possibilities, she came upon the work of Jane Dunnewold and her book, Complex Cloth . Through a process of reading and experimenting, she has developed an extensive knowledge of surface design techniques. Her endless fascination with color and texture on cloth informs all of her artwork. Drawing on her background in graphic design and early work in performance, she makes fine art for the gallery, interactive installations, and celebration art for festivals and performance. She gets great satisfaction from teaching students of all ages. She shares her extensive research, studio technique, exploration and experimentation with students in her workshops.
