Printing with a gel plate often feels like it is in the realm of magic. It is a recent addition to the artist’s toolkit and is gaining traction as an essentially painterly method that allows for multiple yet unique prints from the same plate, without a press. Prints may be spontaneously executed with no preliminary sketches, or may involve elaborate planning and careful registration. The balance between intended and unanticipated results can be surprising and addictive! This workshop is suitable for those new to monoprinting with a gel plate and/or collage, as well as experienced printmakers who wish to expand their skillset in an atmosphere of exploration and discovery.

Day 1: We will start with the fundamentals – colour blending and gradations, creating textures, using masks and stencils, the use of different viscosity paints, building a composition and registering multiple layers.

Day 2: We will then move on to resist/transfer printing using laser prints of your own drawings or photographs, wrapping paper and magazine pages. We’ll also experiment with combining multiple techniques and layers in a single-pull print, drawing on the plate with acrylic paint or coloured markers, and more.

Day 3: Your gel printed papers, perhaps with assorted paper ephemera (copies of handwritten letters, music scores, dictionary pages, drawings etc.) will then be employed on the third day, to compose simple abstract collages. You will complete this day with several one-of-a kind art cards, a collaged journal and the beginnings of a larger collage.

Day 4: Options for moving ahead with your larger collage will be considered and acted upon. Jennifer will demonstrate how she mounts her collages on wood panels and prepares them for exhibiting. We will be packing a lot into four days!

Instructor Bio
Jennifer has been an artist and teacher for over 40 years. She studied textile arts at Capilano College in North Vancouver, BC and was a founding member of Foxglove Fibre Arts Studio/Gallery on Bowen Island. She has participated in numerous exhibitions on the Sunshine Coast, Bowen Island, Vancouver and Vancouver Island. For over a decade, she was the BC rep for the Surface Design Association, an international fiber arts organization based in the US. Hand-painted and printed fabrics or papers are fundamental to Jennifer’s art practice. While she uses a myriad of different techniques and tools to create them, in recent years she has become more and more enthralled with the possibilities inherent in monoprinting with a gel plate. Working intuitively, she embraces the unanticipated results of a printing session as well as the happenstance juxtaposition of collage elements. She is passionate about sharing her skills with others. Please visit her instagram account for inspiration. @jenniferannelove23
