Kelman, Mo (#6351) Skins, Skeletons, Nets, and Pantyhose, August 13-17

In this experimental workshop, students will learn methods for building skeletal structures with rigid and semi-rigid materials like rattan, bamboo, wood and found materials.  Techniques will include lashing and chaotic plaiting. To build skins onto these structures, we will work with gut, rice papers and a variety of netting systems. As well, methods and coatings for transforming elastic fabrics into skins, including pantyhose, will be demonstrated. Exercises, brainstorming sessions, and problem-solving challenges will guide your production of a series of prototypes that will ignite your studio practice. All levels welcome.

Instructor requests that students have received a Covid vaccination or the most recently available booster in order to attend the workshop.

Instructor bio: Mo Kelman, the recipient of a National Endowment for the Arts Fellowship, has taught at leading New England arts institutions and shown her sculpture work in more than 50 exhibitions across the United States, Europe, Japan and Korea. She is professor emeritus of art at the Community College of Rhode Island and has taught classes and workshops at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts, Penland, Snow Farm, Maiwa (Vancouver, BC), Zijdelings (Netherlands), Fibres West (Australia), Massachusetts College of Art and RISD. Kelman received her MFA from the University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth.
