Experimental Eco Dyeing: Documenting the Alchemy
Clarissa Callesen, Instructor
Dates: July 18th – 19th, 2021 (9am-4pm)
Nature was the very first eco dyer. I invite you to join me in witnessing the magic that happens when plants, pressure, and heat combine to create beauty. This is a class of exploration and documentation. The variables involved in creating eco-dyed materials are endless. You will learn the fundamentals of eco dyeing: equipment, materials, mordants, and processes, then we will depart from the known traditions and explore new recipes, materials, and processes. This class is very much about experimentation, having fun, and happy accidents. Like a good scientist or witch, we will be recording our experimentation for future reference. This class is suitable for the beginner who has no experience with eco dyeing through to the more advanced student. More experienced eco dyers will be challenged to expand their current ideas and practices around eco dyeing.
We will explore printing on materials other than just cloth and using components beyond just plant materials to alter fiber. This is a hands-on fast-moving class celebrating that creativity has endless variations. You will leave class with a stash of one-of-a-kind fabric and a journal full of your experiments to fuel your future creations.
