The Power of the Neutral Palette
As landscape painters, we revel in the brilliance of richly saturated colors, yet they are but one dimension of a fully balanced palette. Neutral colors or “grays” are the other dimension, and serve as a necessary counterpoint to saturated colors. Without neutral colors, we have an all-saturated palette, which won’t form believable landscape-like harmonies. The neutral palette is the palette of the Hudson River Painters, the Dutch Landscapists, the Tonalists, and many well-known contemporary painters. Through a combination of color mixing exercises and short paintings, you will learn:
- the power of neutral palettes to create realistic and “naturalistic” harmonies
- The differences between saturated colors and neutral colors
- how to mix neutrals chromatically (with other colors) or with neutral pigments
- how neutral colors can complement saturated color to make saturated color harmonies more effective.
Note: Whether you are an aspiring Impressionist, or prefer less chromatic palettes, you’ll learn how vital neutrals are for every landscape painter. Instructor Mitch demonstrates in oil, but the workshop is also suitable for pastel painters.
