Abstract Experiments with Pigment Sticks, Oil & Cold Wax
Sara Post, Instructor
Dates: October 3rd – 6th, 2019 (9am-4pm)
Materials Fee: $10
Draw, paint and print with oil pigment sticks as a primary medium or as added to cold wax, oil paint, alkyd and solvents. Richly pigmented oil sticks allow artists to draw and layer marks retaining intensity of color and integrity of line. Application of color may range from thin shims and transfers to densely textured layers applied with finger tips
and brushes as well as brayers, scrapers and palette knives. A variety of exercises in abstract composition will underscore exploration of ideas based in culture and nature central to contemporary abstract painting. We’ll work on various sizes of Arches oil paper for maximum flexibility. Instructor will demo mounting oil paper on wood cradled board for exhibit. This class emphasizes invention and experimentation to augment each student’s personal vision, employing what artist and printmaker Kathan Brown calls “strategies to create miracles.”
Sara Post is a painter, printmaker and ceramicist. She studied painting at Southern Methodist University and received a Master’s degree in ceramics and art education from Northern Arizona University. She has been a practicing artist since 1981, nationally acclaimed for her glaze painted ceramic sculpture and wall works, which have been featured in the American Craft Museum and the Smithsonian as well as in galleries in Canada, Italy and Japan. Her work also includes private and public commissions. A printmaking residency in Italy in 2007 changed her perspective on art making and initiated a shift away from ceramics. In 2012 Post designed a twenty five piece textile collection for P-B Fabrics. Experiments with encaustics led to another change: painting with oil paint, cold wax medium and oil pigment sticks. Her lively, beautiful abstractions are currently represented by Sparrow Gallery and Jen Tough Gallery. Her work is also featured in the recent book Cold Wax Medium: Techniques, Concepts and Conversations by Rebecca Crowell and Jerry McLaughlin. Post considers teaching an integral part of her art practice. She is an instructor in abstract painting and drawing at the Davis Arts Center, Shake Rag Alley Center for the Arts and the Mendocino Art Center.
